About the podcast

Best known for the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic making-of from Boss Fight Books and my longform oral history of Bethesda’s Morrowind, I’ve been covering games professionally since 2016. I’ve written oral histories and reported features on Enter the Matrix and The Matrix: Path of Neo, Treyarch’s Spider-Man 2, Friday the 13th: The Game, Star Wars Battlefront II (’17), Destiny 2, BioWare’s Anthem, Jedi: Fallen Order, Samurai Shodown (’19), TIE Fighter, and tons more. By bringing that oral tradition to the medium of podcasting, I hope to offer a wider view of video-game history—and give listeners a better understanding of the art and craft of game development.

“Veteran games journalist” (New York Post) Alex James Kane is the author of the Boss Fight Books entry on Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. He has written for Fangoria, Polygon, Rolling Stone, StarWars.com, USA Today, and Variety. He lives in west-central Illinois.

Praise for my book on Knights of the Old Republic

“Alex Kane has written a fine book about how one the best video games ever made was created. Darth Revan, HK-47, the lost planet of Sleheyron, a charming story about Ed Asner—it’s everything you’ve always wanted to know about a truly fascinating game.”

—Tom Bissell (Andor, The Disaster Artist)

“Vigorously researched, accessibly written, and—most importantly—total fun from start to finish.”

—Blake J. Harris (Console Wars)

“Alex Kane’s book reveals the amazing story behind one of the greatest Star Wars games of all time, and how its creation was an adventure all its own, just like the films by which they were inspired.”

—Walt Williams (Spec Ops: The Line, Star Wars Battlefront II)

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is one of the most significant Star Wars games ever made—one whose reach continues to influence both fans and Star Wars creators to this day. Through his interviews with many of the key creators behind the game, Alex weaves together the compelling tale of its creation. The stories told are frequently as fascinating as the game’s own narrative.”

—Michael Dailey, Lucasfilm Games

“Bloody excellent.”

—Josh West (GamesRadar)

“Alex Kane’s new book on Knights of the Old Republic is something special.”

—Cameron Kunzelman (Paste)

“Where so many Star Wars games in particular have their back stories and secrets told in dead forums or obscure YouTube videos, Alex Kane brings one of the grandest tie-in games of all time down to earth, making it all the more amazing such a game was ever achieved. In a world where it seems like game development is fraught with trials and tribulations, it’s a story of hope we really need right now.”

—Elijah Beahm (Unwinnable Monthly)
